RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several access tunnels providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their courage," he said. "They were part of a great many UK service members on duty over the holidays. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, highlights how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
